Astronomy(天文学) is the oldest science known to man. Thousands of years ago man looked at the stars and wondered about the heavens. But man was limited(限制) by what he could see with his eyes alone.
The Greeks studied astronomy over 2,000 years ago. They could see the size, color, and brightness of stars. They could see their places in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help them study the starry heavens(星空).
Each new tool added(增加) to the files of astronomy, it helped man reach out into space. Until there were telescopes(望远镜), man knew little about the moon. They did not know that the planet called Saturn(土星) had rings around it. Their sight was so limited that they could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s, people thought there were only six planets. Pluto(冥王星), the last of nine planets to be discovered was not seen until 1930.
Before the spectroscope(分光器), man did not know what kind of gases is in the sun or other stars. Without the radio telescope(无线电望远镜) we did not know that radio noises come from far out in space.
Today, astronomy is a growing science. We have learned more in the last fifty years than in the whole history of astronomy.

In the south of Germany, there is a beautiful state — Bavaria(巴伐利亚). Its capital city is Munich(慕尼黑).
Munich was founded in 1157. It’s an old city, isn’t it? In German, Munich means “the place of monks(僧侣)”. In fact, it was those monks who began to build the city. Later, people also built their own customs(海关), markets and some factories.
As time goes by, Munich has become one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. And it is the biggest center of art, culture and science of Europe. But at the same time, old customs(习俗) have been passed down for a long period. So the city is also called “a village with over a million people.”
Today, the prices in Munich are the highest in Germany. Everything here is very expensive, so many old Germans have to move out of Munich and go to some other places to live. But those young and rich Germans are moving into the city from all over the country.
In the center of the city there are some old churches, king’s palaces(宫殿) and some other buildings. And in the famous National Library, Lenin(列宁) once worked.
There is something special in the life of Munich. Do you know what it is? Let me tell you, Munich has five seasons in a year. I think you must feel surprised at this, don’t you? The five seasons are spring, summer, autumn, winter and beer(啤酒) season. From the early of March every year, people are making a kind of strong beer for a whole month.
