Do you want to go on a private or custom teen group tour to experience the joy of traveling? Well, you’ve come to the right place! If you have a class, sports team, scout(童子军) or guide group, or just enough families or friends to fill a tour, we can work with you to arrange a specific program for your group. Travel is an amazing way to learn more about the world and also about yourself as you encounter different places, people and situations allowing you to gain self-confidence and broaden your perspective on life. Whether you want to use your tour as a team building exercise, an extended field trip or a graduation celebration, you can expect memories that will last a lifetime! Our goal at Adventure Teen Travel is to broaden horizons(开阔视野) through active life experience. To do this we design all our tours to be active adventures, although what that means will vary from tour to tour. It could mean an adventure sports program in the Canadian Rockies or a focus on the culture, art and history of Europe. We love to explore many great ideas you might have for what would be your ideal teen summer adventure, and of course we have plenty of ideas to help you out as well. The number, ages and interests of the members will all decide the type of trip we design for you. The questionnaire below will assist us in designing the perfect trip for your group. After you fill in this form and mail it to us, we’ll be in touch to discuss more details.

Bicycles are a popular means of transportation in various areas of the world. So, where did they come from and how were they first designed? The bicycle actually developed from a little wooden horse with a fixed front wheel, which was invented in France in the 1790’s. However, you could only ride this bike with your feet because there weren’t any pedals(踏板) and the fixed front wheel prevented it from being controlled. It was improved in Germany in 1817, when baron Karl von Drais developed a controllable front wheel to replace the fixed one. He called this a "dandy horse". In addition to this, in 1839, the first pedals were introduced by Kirk-patrick Macmillan, a blacksmith from Scotland. Many of the old bikes had very large front wheels, because it was believed that the bigger the front wheel was, the faster the bike went.
The next development of the bike came about in England in the early 1880’s, when the "safety bicycle” was invented. This particular bike had a chain, and equal sized wheels. The years that followed saw a development of tires of air (1880’s), two and three speed hub gears(加速中心齿轮) (1890’s), and derailleur gears(变速齿轮) (1899). The derailleur gear was the last major development of bicycle design until the 1970’s. At that time bicycles became more aerodynamic(空气动力学的) and they made use of more unconventional(非常规的) frames.
The modern bicycle in America has the internally geared multi-speed hub. There have been many developments: the ten-speed, the mountain bike and the recumbent bicycle(躺骑车). One of the most recent developments in bike design is Georgena Terry’s new bicycle built especially for women. The front wheel is smaller than the back wheel and the fork angle has been slightly changed to help riders sit straight and more comfortably.

I believe in unicorns(独角兽) is a story told by a boy called Tomas. Tomas lives in a small town. Frightful things happen around him because his town becomes a war zone. But he finds some comfort in the library. Although he has always thought reading novels is a waste of time, he is attracted by the storyteller who runs the library. She has a carved unicorn that she uses to illustrate her story. The tale she tells Tomas and the other children is a Bible story of Noah’s flood. Noah gathers all the animals on his ark(方舟) to save them from drowning. But he forgets the unicorns. In great trouble, the big white horses each with one horn swim through the flood into the sea. Finally they become narwhals(独角鲸). The narwhal is a whale which still lives in northern icy waters above the Arctic Circle. The male has a long single tusk(尖牙). Meanwhile, outside the magic of the library, Tomas’s beloved father is missing, the family’s animals are dead, cars are burned out in the streets and there are soldiers everywhere. The story is quite short, but there’s a lot to think about. Can hearing a story really change someone’s life? Why is it so important that, when the town is under fire, the contents of the library are saved? Michael Morpurgo, the writer, is giving one percent of his income from I believe in unicorns to support the newly built Unicorn Theatre for Children in south London near London Bridge. It opened recently and is the first theatre in England entirely for children. The pictures in this book are beautifully drawn by Gary Blythe in many colors. The pictures help you understand not only the unicorns but Tomas’s own way of life.

In 1809, Mary Kies received the first US patent(专利证书,专利权) issued to a woman. Kies, a Connecticut native, invented a process for weaving straw(编织稻草) with silk or thread. First Lady Dolley Madison praised her for improving the nation’s hat industry. Unfortunately, the patent file was destroyed in a big fire in 1836.
Until about 1840, only 20 other US patents were issued to women. The inventions were related to clothes, tools, cook stoves and fireplaces. Patent is the "ownership” of an invention and only the inventor(s) can apply for(申请) it. In the past, women were not allowed to have equal rights of property ownership(财产权) and many women patented their inventions under their husband’s or father’s name. Women were also prevented from receiving higher education necessary for inventing.
Here are a few examples to be noticed, and from these examples, we know enough reasons for encouraging girls and women to pursue technology-based courses and careers.
The women inventors took annually granted (被承认的) US patents rising from 2.6 percent in 1977 to 10.3 percent in 1998.
The majority of the US woman-inventor patents are in the chemical technologies.
In 1996, every eleven US patent grants included a woman inventor.
In the past 20 years, about 83 percent of the US patent grants to women were for utility(实用) patents, 16.5 percent for design patents, and 0.5 percent for plant patents.
About 35 percent of the US woman-inventor patents granted during the 1977 to 1996 period originated from(发源于) California, New York or New Jersey.
Today, hundreds of thousands of women apply for and receive a patent every year. About 20% of all inventors are currently female and that number should quickly rise to 50% over the next generation.
51. Dolley Madison was _______. A. the First Lady who received US patent B. the first woman inventor C. the wife of the US President D. praised by Mary Kies
52. Mary Kies’s patent was _____. A. a Connecticut native B. about a process of weaving silk C. useful in hat industry D. issued in 1836
53. In the past, few women patented their own inventions because ________. A. the inventions were related to clothes, tools, and cook stoves B. only inventors could apply for a patent C. women were not allowed to have property ownership D. women were prevented from receiving higher education
54. In 1998, ________. A. the woman-inventor patent share rose by 7.7 percent since 1977 B. the woman-inventor patent share was 2.6 percent C. most of the woman-inventor patents were in the chemical technologies D. the woman-inventor patent share in the chemical technologies was 10.3 percent
55. In the past 20 years, ______ in the US. A. 83% of the patent grants were for utility patents B. more than half of the woman-inventor patent share was for utility patents C. only few patent grants to women were for design patents D. no grants to women were for plant patents
