【叶芝，W. B.】（William Butler Yeats1865～1939）爱尔兰诗人和剧作家。1923年度的诺贝尔文学奖获得者。出生于都柏林画师家庭，政治上属贵族主 义者。早期作品带有唯美主义倾向和浪漫主义色彩。90年代后，因支持爱尔兰民族自治运动，诗风逐渐走向坚实明朗和接近现实。代表作有诗剧《胡里痕的凯瑟琳》（1902）、《1916年的复活节》（1921）等。20世纪20年代中期后，因接近人民生活和热 心玄学派诗歌研究，作品融现实主义、象征主义和哲理思考为一体，以洗练的口语和含义丰富的象征手法，表现善恶、生死、美丑、灵肉 的矛盾统一，具有较高艺术价值。突出诗作有《钟楼》（1928）、《盘旋的楼梯》（1929）及《驶向拜占庭》等。

《当你老了》这首爱情诗写于1893年，作者叶芝当时29岁。五年前，诗人遇见了爱尔兰民族自治运动的领导人之一、著名的女演员茉德•冈，从此叶芝对她怀有深深的爱慕之情，忠贞不渝，却一直遭到拒绝，茉德•冈嫁给了与她并肩战斗的麦克布莱德少校。二十三年后，1916年麦克布莱德少校在斗争中献身去世，叶芝再次向茉德•冈求婚，仍旧遭到拒绝。我们可以想象叶芝感情生活上的痛苦。

这首诗的背景是:30多岁的伊里丽莎白坐在轮椅上,当时她是小有名气的诗人,小他整整7岁的布朗宁诗人向她表达了爱意,她从轮椅上站了起来,开始了新的生命!但是伊里丽莎白的父亲一致反对,于是他们双双私奔,一起过了一辈子..     这是现实中的神话,也是爱情的神话,是真爱的典范!
