Father’s Day
It is well-known that Mother’s Day was put forward in America in 1907. Two years later a woman, Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, in the state of Washington suggested a similar day to honor(对……表示尊敬) the head of the family----the father. Her mother died when she was very young, and she was brought up(养育) by her father. She loved her father very much.
In response(响应) to Mrs. Dodd’s idea, Father’s Day was approved (认可) in 1916. The red or white rose was recognized(承认) as the Father’s Day flower. Businessmen make good use of the chance to encourage(鼓励) sons and daughters to honor their fathers with small thank-you presents, such as a tie or a pair of socks, as well as by sending a greeting card.
During the Second World War, American armymen staying in Britain began to ask for Father’s Day greeting cards to send home. This day was gradually accepted by the British public. And it is now well celebrated in Britain on the third Sunday in June in much the same way as in America.
Father’s Day seems to be much less important than Mother’s Day. Not many of the children offer their fathers some presents. But American fathers still think they are much better fated(命运) than the fathers of many other countries, who have not even a day for their sake.
