文中的investment immigration和skill immigration分别指“投资移民”和“技术移民”。Investment immigration主要以个人资产作考量，各国设定的衡量标准也有所不同；而skill immigration则主要依据申请者的专业技能、工作经验、英语水平来评定。例如加拿大的skill immigration目前就实行point-based system（打分制）。

为了获得别国的permanent residency（永久居住权），例如拿到美国green card（绿卡），很多有钱人选择了investment immigration。但immigrant investors（移民投资者）往往在缴纳了巨额brokerage fee（中介费）后，遭到immigration agencies（移民中介）欺诈。目前很多国家出台了新的immigration policy（移民政策），并对illegal immigration（非法移民）进行了打击。

与immigration（移民入境）相对的是emigration，即“移民出境”。例如，从中国移民去美国的人，对美国政府来说是immigrant（入境移民），而对中国政府来说则是emigrant（出境移民）。
