今年有140万人参加了1月9日进行的2010年硕士研究生统一入学考试。这项考试在就业“寒流”中继续升温，报考人数创下2001年以来最高纪录，比上年增长13%。

在上面的报道中，national post-graduate entrance examination就是“全国研究生入学考试”，也可以用postgraduate qualification exam来表示。“考研”就是take part in the national post-graduate entrance examination / postgraduate qualification exam。也有部分学生是不需要参加国家研究生入学考试就能上研的，因为他们获得了“保研”（postgraduate recommendation）资格。

要被录取为研究生，首先要通过国家研究生入学考试，这是qualifying examination / preliminary exam（初试），在过线之后才能参加secondary examination（复试），复试一般包括written examination（笔试）和oral examination（口试）或interview（面试）。在录取之后，根据成绩的高低，又分为government-supported graduate student（公费研究生）和self-supporting graduate student（自费研究生）。部分研究生是边工作边学习，此类研究生即on-the-job postgraduate student（在职研究生）。
