无论是买车买房还是子女上学，暂住证依然是外来务工和经商人员的一道重要“门槛”。据悉，北京市正在进行暂住证改为居住证的调研，力争今年在全市推广使用带有电子芯片的居住证。这意味着暂住证即将逐渐淡出历史舞台。

Beijing launched its temporary residence permit policy in 1985. There are now six million registered migrants in the city, making up 30 percent of the population. With new residence permits, migrants should benefit from more rights and favorable policies, such as social security, medical care, and housing.

文中的temporary residence permit就是指“暂住证”，而与之相对应的permanent residence permit则是“永久居留权”，而residence permit则是指“居住证”。持有residence permit的居民在申请economically affordable apartment（经适房）、a pass into Hong Kong and Macao（港澳通行证）等方面享受“同城待遇”。
