Many European flights took to the skies Tuesday for the first time in days but the travel chaos was far from over: London's airports remained shut, a massive flight backlog was growing and scientists feared that history could repeat itself with yet another volcanic eruption in Iceland.

文中的flight backlog就是指“积压航班”，backlog即用来形容“积压的工作（backlog of work）、待办的事项。”商务活动中出现的“订单积压”也可以用backlog of orders来表示。在冰岛火山爆发后，受volcanic ash cloud（火山灰云）影响，欧洲各国实行了air control（航空管制），实现某时间段内blanket closure of airspace（全面禁航），造成了大量的stranded passengers（滞留旅客）。

我们搭乘班机时，最熟悉的就是flight attendant（空服人员）和flight crew（机组人员）。在情况紧急时，有些人会选择charter flight（包机），这也被形象地称为“打飞的”。飞行事故后，地面人员会检查black box（黑匣子，航空飞行记录器。里面装有飞行数据记录器和舱声录音器）来确定事故原因。
