这个习语源自20世纪50年代。从字面意思看，球就是这么弹起来的，也就是自然规律，于是引申为“这就是生活”。还有一个类似的说法叫“That's the way the cookie crumbles”，饼干就是这么碎的。不管是弹起的球，还是碎了的饼干，这些说法能够流传至今，应该归功于它们念起来朗朗上口——“ball”和“bounce”都是“b”开头，而“cookie”和“crumbles”都是“c”开头。
