山东省潍坊市坊子区法院法官陈本涛两年前在执行案件时向原告索要了19000元“办案经费”，不料整个过程被偷拍。今年4月26日，原告陈女士向坊子区法院陈本涛法官寄去一封信和当时秘密拍的部分录像光盘，要求陈本涛在三日内归还19000元的“办案经费”，并赔偿5万元精神损失费。

在上面的报道中，mental damage compensation就是“精神损失费”，也叫“精神损失赔偿”，还可以用compensation for shock或compensation for mental injury来表示。随着人们法律意识和人权意识的增强，精神损失费也逐渐为大众所熟知。像这种“无形”的损失费还有reputation damage compensation（名誉损失费）。

和精神损失相对的是material damage（物质损失），案件审理中经常会提出economic compensation（经济赔偿）。
