“Thinking in a brown study”？ 难道福尔摩斯必须呆在“四壁涂抹成褐色的书房”里才能完成缜密推理吗？其实，“In a brown study”是个固定搭配，指“in a state of deep thought”（沉思）。

这个短语分别源于brown和study的两个旧用法。因为brown在色调上属于暗色，16世纪时人们常用它来形容“忧郁、沮丧”的心境；study在14世纪的古英语中表示“a state of reverie or contemplation”（幻想或沉思）。由此，brown study现在可以表示两层含义“a state of daydreaming or deep thought”（做白日梦；沉思）。
