8月15日起至9月15日，北京市10万名普查员将统一着装、佩戴证件，逐门逐户进行户口整顿和摸底的入户核对、登记工作。据介绍，今年的人口普查和前五次不一样的是，以往是按常住人口户口所在地进行登记，今年则是按常住人口的现住地进行登记。

文中的door-to-door interviews就是指“入户摸底调查”，也称为door-to-door household survey，由census enumerators（人口普查员）负责开展，为即将迎来的sixth nationwide population census（第六次全国人口普查）做前期准备工作。本次人口普查非常重视对住户的信息保密，因此普查员都事先签订了confidentiality agreements（保密协议）。

拥有Beijing permanent residency/hukou（北京市常住户口）的住户需向普查员提供household register（户口登记簿），户籍在外地人员则需提供temporary residence permit（暂住证）或者local permanent residence permit（长期居住证）。
