据新华社报道，“十二五”（2011-2015）计划期末，我国人口总量将达到13.9亿左右，城镇人口将首次超过农村人口。60岁及以上老年人口在“十二五”期间将年均净增800万，并在2015年突破2亿。上世纪80年代以后出生“80后”人口成为流动人口的主体。

在上面的报道中，mobile population就是“流动人口”，也可以用floating population来表示。Mobile在这里的意思是“流动的、移动的”，例如：mobile labor（流动劳动力）、a mobile stall vendor（流动摊贩）、mobile home（活动住房）、mobile library（流动图书馆，图书馆服务车）等。

如今我国的人口结构逐渐发生改变，aging of population（人口老龄化）成为我们很快将面临的一个问题，过去几十年人口年龄优势带来的demographic dividend（人口红利）也即将消失。另外，越来越多的农村人口向城市转移，造成rural left-behind population（农村留守人口）减少，也使得urban population（城镇人口）数量将超过rural population（农村人口）。
