在2010年上海世博会中国船舶馆里，科学家们向人们展示了一项大胆的创想，那就是在大海上建造漂移农场船，用来种植农作物和养殖家禽。保证居民们身处海上，也能吃到新鲜丰富的绿色食物。

文中的floating farm就是指“漂移农场”。漂移农场船上可以种植蔬菜水果、养殖家禽鱼类以及进行食物加工等，还可以进行sea water desalinization（海水淡化），提供生产用水和饮用水。此外，科学家还利用了风能、太阳能装置进行发电，并进行soilless cultivation（无土栽培）。

Floating除了表示具体有形的“浮动”，还可以表示抽象的“不固定”，比如不确定投某一党派票的选民就是floating voter（游离选民）；迅速流动的短期投机性资金被称为floating money（游资）；而随身准备的“备用零钱”就可以用cash float来表达。
