在上面的报道中，sex ratio即“性别比”，“男女出生性别比”则是male-female birth ratio。 Ratio是“比例、比率”的意思，例如：The ratio of pupils to teachers was 30 to 1.（小学学生和教师的比例是30比1。）

据研究，按现在的性别比例，20年后将有数千万男子成为bachelor（光棍）。男性过剩会造成婚姻挤压，导致May-December marriage（老夫少妻婚姻）的增加。要让男女性别比逐渐实现均衡，就要在各方面实现gender equality（性别平等），消除gender discrimination（性别歧视），严格限制prenatal gender selection（产前性别选择）的行为。
