这首歌曲选自莎士比亚的喜剧《威尼斯商人》(1596-97)，III.ii.63 ff。当巴萨尼奥(Bassinio)选择了金盒、银盒和铅盒时，他一面独白，乐队一面奏乐唱歌。唱这首歌曲的目的可能是为了帮助巴萨尼奥做出决定。请注意在这首歌里，有不少词和lead‘铅’钾韵：bred, head, noursihed, fed。因此有可能向巴萨尼提示，叫他选择铅盒。
