The best director award went to Lu Chuan of China, whose black-and-white film 'City of Life and Death' (also known as 'Nanjing! Nanjing!') depicts the chilling account of the Nanjing massacre during China's war with Japan (1937-1945). The film--a big hit in China last year--shows the events through the eyes of several characters. The movie sparked controversy with its sympathetic portrayal of a young Japanese soldier.

Fellow Hong Kong actress Wai Ying-hung was named best supporting actress for 'At the End of Daybreak,' while the film also received the award for best newcomer Ng Meng Hui of Malaysia. The Asian Film Awards honored two veteran filmmakers.
